week 13

For this week I'm gonna talk about some costal hazards but the main one will be coastal erosion. Since I live in a coastal town on the peninsula erosion is something close to home for me. The google definition of erosion is "the natural geological process where earth materials—soil, rock, or sediment—are worn away and transported by water, wind, or ice" Erosion is something that is happening here in Monterey ca. Erosion  is effecting areas like the Fishermans wharf, marina state beach the shoreline of the peninsula. This is important to the local in the area because the wharf Is a staple in tourism but most local family's do come to the area to have dinner or just a simple family outings on the weekends. The wharf also attracts people from all the world when they visit. Since the sea levels are rosing in the area the dunes of the peninsula is are expressing rescission rates from 1.0 to 6.0 feet per year. The high storms are causing sea levels to rise to a possible 4.4 square mile that will affect the whole costal line of Monterey, this will effect costal home, sewage pipes and infraction like roads.

The area also experiences landslides, the most infamous one would be highway 1 in Big Sur. highway 1 is a 75 mile stretch that connects the Monterey peninsula all the way to LA. This stretch of high way is very prone to landslides due to costal erosion. when the landslides collapse, a part of the high way sees to exist.  The local organizations have systems to monitor the erosion on the shorelines. they have the USGS that develops risks factor in case of a tragedy happening. the local beaches have warning sign about beach hazards and rip currents. they also have ocean condition alerts and real time weather alters
